We offer a type of plastering known as ‘skimming’ – which might be the answer to all of your problems.

Skimming is a top coat of plaster which is used to cover-up superficial blemishes and restore the surface of a wall or ceiling to a smooth and level finish.

In all cases there is a only certain amount you can achieve using a filler and rubbing the walls down. Even after your great efforts the surface may still look uneven. This is when skimming the surface comes into its own, because it gives you a consistent, clean and smooth surface to which you can then apply paint, wallpaper or tiles. Skimming is ideal if you are intending to paint the surfaces of your walls, as it is an effective way of achieving smooth contours on your walls and hiding minor blemishes that would become more noticeable and even exaggerated by covering them with paint.

Skimming Walls And Ceilings

Most commonly we skim walls and ceilings in the following circumstances:

  • Superficial damage to interior walls and ceilings: Where the surfaces have been chipped and scuffed over the years or there have been some repairs or alterations.
  • Preparing to decorate: After the debatable joy and arduous task of peeling off wallpaper; which has taken some of the plaster off the walls, or to cover the residue of glue on the walls.
  • Tiling: If you have taken tiles off the wall and it has caused damage to the surface, or if you need to achieve a smooth surface to apply them to.
  • Artex removal: Artex is no longer fashionable, so we are often asked to remove or cover it and make the ceilings look smooth and even.

It is a wall and ceiling finish consisting of plaster mixed with marble dust, applied with a spatula or trowel in thin, multiple layers, which are then burnished to create a smooth surface with the illusion of depth and texture. Venetian plaster techniques include marmorino, scagliola, and sgraffito.

At Capital Plastering Ireland  walls are plastered and given a trowel polished high sheen in a spectacular marble finish using marmorino veneziano plaster. Marmorino is a natural lime based plaster with ground marble.

This is then plastered giving the impression of the overall object being completely made of marble. Cool as stone to the touch with a satiny look and feel, marmorino gives your walls and floors an understated elegance.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to interior and exterior use of Venetian Marble Plaster and it has a full range of colours, decorative effects and textures. It turns an ordinary wall, floor or ceiling into a masterpiece.

Pebble Dashing

Pebble dashing is a cost effective means of covering unsightly brickwork or breeze blocks.

It can be used to add a sense of character that is often associated with period properties.

By the nature of its textured appearance and natural rustic charm Capital Plastering Ireland consider that pebble dash can transform the look of a building drastically.

The term ‘pebble dash’ is used to describe this external rendered finish because smooth pebbles or jagged spa are thrown or “dashed” onto a topcoat of render so that they stick to it before it dries and provide a weathering surface. Some pebble dash renders are referred to as ‘spa’ which consists of jagged chippings that are then embedded into and adhere to the render better, which tends to last longer.

As part of Capital Plastering Ireland pebble dashing service at we can offer our clients a choice of stone and spa coatings.

You can choose a spa stone, which are often used for their particular natural colours and textures, or alternatively you may wish to opt for ordinary stones and simply paint over them for a more subtle uniform effect.
